Shih-Tzu

The Shih-Tzu breed originated in China. The meaning of the breed name was originally "lion dog" because this variety of dog was bred to resemble a miniature lion. Recent DNA analysis confirms that this is one of the oldest breed of dogs still in existence today.

Down through history it was a great honor to be given a Shih-Tzu. For many hundreds of years it was customary for the Dalai Lama to give the Chinese Emperor the finest specimens of the breed. The Chinese jealously guarded the Shih-Tzu and were very reluctant to let them out of the country. It wasn't until sometime between the First and Second World Wars that a few were smuggled out of China, and they immediately became a favorite in many other areas of the world, including here in the Houston area.

Although there can be considerable size variation, the Shih-Tzu will generally be compact, carrying good weight and substance. Weights can vary from 6 to 12 lbs. The Shih-Tzu breed has short legs and typically a maximum height of about 10.5 inches. The Shih-Tzu is small but very sturdy. These dogs are long-bodied and short-legged, and carry themselves with a proud, dignified, aristocratic bearing, yet are usually happy and playful.

Their long, dense coat may be any color, and they carry their plumy tail over their back. The long hair growing from the top of their muzzle falls to either side of their face giving them the characteristic Shih-Tzu expression. The Shih-Tzu breed is sometimes called the ''chrysanthemum-faced dog'' because of the way the hair grows about their face in all directions.

They do not require much exercise and are ideal for small homes and apartments. They are less "yappy" than other toy breeds and are usually friendly with strangers and other pets.

Shih-Tzu Puppies are great lovers of comfort. They enjoy cuddling on laps and snuggling into soft pillows, with soulful eyes inviting pampering, which they accept graciously. Their happy, out-going and affectionate temperament coupled with their friendly and trusting nature make them a perfect pet for almost any home.
